Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) is one of the most efficient high-deposition welding processes used in heavy industry—and it’s probably happening out of sight more often than you realize.
In SAW, the arc is formed between a continuously fed consumable electrode (wire) and the workpiece, but unlike open-arc processes, the entire arc zone is submerged beneath a blanket of granular flux. This flux performs multiple roles simultaneously: it shields the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination, stabilizes the arc, and contributes alloying elements to the weld metal.
Because the arc is not exposed, SAW produces minimal spatter, no visible arc flash, and significantly reduced fume emissions compared to processes like GMAW or SMAW. The result is a clean, high-quality weld with deep penetration and excellent mechanical properties.
