The bombardier beetle doesn’t just defend itself — it runs a controlled chemical reactor inside its body. 🧪🪲 When threatened, the beetle mixes hydroquinones and hydrogen peroxide inside a reinforced reaction chamber. Enzymes called catalases and peroxidases instantly catalyze an exothermic reaction, rapidly raising the temperature to ~100°C (near boiling). The reaction produces benzoquinones, toxic irritants that are expelled as a pulsed jet spray. What’s wild is the precision: the beetle fires bursts at up to 500 pulses per second, preventing self-damage while maintaining pressure and heat control. Even more impressive — the spray nozzle is articulated, allowing the beetle to aim its chemical blast in multiple directions.
