Known scientifically as Chrysomallon squamiferum, this hydrothermal vent snail lives more than 2,400 meters below the surface of the Indian Ocean, where temperatures can swing from near-freezing seawater to superheated vent fluids exceeding 350°C. Instead of avoiding these extremes, it has evolved to thrive in them. What makes it unique is its armor. Unlike typical gastropods, this species has dermal sclerites—overlapping, scale-like structures covering its foot. In some populations, these scales are reinforced with iron sulfide minerals absorbed from vent chemistry. Its shell is also layered: an outer iron sulfide coating, a thick organic layer that dissipates mechanical stress, and an inner aragonite layer composed of calcium carbonate.
