What you’re seeing is a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) at work — one of the most powerful excavation systems ever engineered. These machines are used to drill through solid rock for rail tunnels, road tunnels, hydroelectric systems, and underground utilities. At the front is a rotating cutterhead, often 10–17 meters in diameter, fitted with dozens of disc cutters made from hardened steel. Each cutter applies extreme force (often 250–300 kN per cutter) to fracture rock via compressive stress, not spinning friction like a drill bit.
