Apollo 8 vs Artemis I — same destination, very different flight logic 🚀🌕 Apollo 8 (1968) was humanity’s first crewed journey beyond low Earth orbit. Its flight path was a free-return translunar trajectory: a precisely timed burn sent the spacecraft toward the Moon so that lunar gravity naturally bent the path back to Earth. If the main engine failed, physics itself brought the crew home. High risk, minimal margin, but fast and elegant given 1960s computing limits. Artemis I (2022) flew a radically different profile. After translunar injection, Orion entered a distant retrograde orbit (DRO)—a large, highly stable orbit tens of thousands of kilometers beyond the Moon.
