Inside most modern faucets is a mixing valve. Hot and cold water enter through separate inlets under pressure. When you turn the handle, you’re not just “opening water” — you’re moving a valve cartridge that changes two things simultaneously:
1️⃣ Flow rate – how much water gets through
2️⃣ Mixing ratio – how much hot vs cold enters the chamber
In single-handle faucets, the handle motion is 2D:
• Up/down → increases or decreases the total opening area → more or less flow
• Left/right → shifts the relative opening sizes of hot and cold ports → temperature change
