Normal water contains dissolved ions (like calcium, sodium, and magnesium). Ultra-pure water has almost none. That makes it unstable: it wants to dissolve anything it touches to regain balance.
In Super-K, this means the water can:
• Leach metals from pipes and containers
• Corrode surfaces more easily than regular water
• Damage human tissue if exposed for long periods (it pulls ions from your skin and eyes)
So why use it at all?
Because purity is everything for neutrino physics. When a neutrino hits a water molecule, it creates a faint flash of Cherenkov radiation.
