Built for one thing—and it did it better than almost anything else. Meet the Lockheed F-104A Starfighter, a jet that pushed aerospace engineering to the edge of what was physically possible. ✈️🚀 Designed in the early Cold War, the F-104 was engineered around speed and climb rate. Its razor-thin, extremely short wings weren’t a design flaw—they were a deliberate solution to minimize drag at Mach 2+. At supersonic speeds, long wings create excess drag and structural stress, so Lockheed essentially shrank them to the bare minimum needed for lift. Power came from the General Electric J79 turbojet, producing over 15,000 lbf of thrust with afterburner.
