When mercury touches aluminum, you’re watching surface chemistry, thermodynamics, and materials science collide ⚗️ Normally, aluminum is protected by a thin, invisible layer of aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃). This oxide forms instantly in air and blocks further reaction — that’s why aluminum doesn’t just keep rusting like iron. Mercury changes everything. Mercury amalgamates with aluminum (it dissolves aluminum atoms into itself). In doing so, it destroys the oxide layer that keeps aluminum stable.
