February marks the start of Black History Month, and we are proud to share the recent rededication of a meaningful piece of local Black history.
A ceremony was held at the Miss Jane Pittman Oak in Lakeland to unveil a new historical marker honoring legendary author Ernest J. Gaines. The tree partly inspired The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, one of Mr. Gaines' most acclaimed novels. Led by the Pointe Coupee Historical Society, the effort replaced a stolen plaque and recognizes the 400 year old oak and its connection to Gaines’s childhood and literary legacy.
💡 Foundation Fact: The BRAF issues an annual award in Mr. Gaines' honor to recognize an up-and-coming Black Author. The Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence comes with a cash prize to help the author continue their craft. We hope you will join us at the 2026 ceremony this fall.
