Thousands of people took to the streets of Argentina on the National Day of Remembrance for Truth and justice on Tuesday, March 24 nearly 50 years after the 1976 military coup that brought in one of Latin America’s deadliest dictatorships. Led by Lieutenant Jorge Rafael Videla, a military junta overthrew Isabel Perón, assumed power, and targeted political activists and dissidents, disappearing an estimated 30,000 people from 1976-1983.
Under the slogan “Memory, Truth, and Justice,” human rights organizations, labor unions, student groups, and political groups marched in remembrance of those the regime disappeared, many of whom are still missing to this day.
