Did you know Ye and Frank Ocean sampled the same Stevie Wonder rendition of The Carpenters? 🤔
In 1972, Stevie Wonder went on The David Frost Show and performed “Close to You” using a talk box, introducing a sound most people had never heard before on national TV. It wasn’t just a cover, it was innovation. That performance became one of the earliest iconic uses of the talk box and showed how technology could reshape emotion in music
Fast forward to 2016, and Frank Ocean hears that exact performance and becomes obsessed with it. He samples it directly on “Close to You” from Blonde, turning Stevie’s version into something stripped, distorted, and deeply personal. Frank even said that rendition became one of his favorite songs ever after discovering it
Now in 2026, Kanye West brings it back again on “WHITE LINES,” sampling that same Stevie Wonder performance. Three different artists, three completely different eras, all pulling from the same moment in time.
