On this day in 2001: the first legal same-sex marriages took place in Amsterdam.
Just after midnight on April 1, 2001 history was made in Amsterdam as the world’s first legal same-sex marriages were officiated at City Hall.
Led by then-mayor Job Cohen, four couples said “I do” in a ceremony that marked the beginning of marriage equality worldwide.
The Netherlands had passed landmark legislation the year before, becoming the first country to fully legalise same-sex marriage and adoption.
