Tens of thousands of protesters turned out in Portland Saturday in the latest “No Kings” rallies against Trump administration policies. Protests took place across the country and even overseas. Earlier in the week, organizers said they expected more than 9 million people to take part in the protests. In Portland, there was a mixture of determination and joyfulness at the rallies. The signs offered pointed messages, such as “Stop Trying to Control Us” (carried by protesters wearing the flowing scarlet dresses and white bonnets forced on the oppressed women in Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale”), “Loser” (with the word superimposed over President Donald Trump’s face) and “Has He Croaked Yet?” (held aloft by a protester in an inflatable frog costume).
