Dust, sweat, and faith. Every year, at dawn on the first Saturday of September, over 900 men wake up in Cabras, put on a white robe, tie a cord around their waist, and take off their shoes. Then, they run. Seven kilometers along dusty trails across the Sinis Peninsula, barefoot, carrying the statue of San Salvatore on their shoulders. Not for spectacle but as an act of devotion, to ask for a blessing or to give thanks. It all began in 1619: to protect the statue from a Saracen raid, the people of Cabras tied branches to their bare feet, raising clouds of dust to appear like a large army. The enemy retreated.
