Last weekend, the Bowling Green State University Rugby Alumni Association returned to our beloved alma mater to honor Roger Mazzarella. Roger has been with the club since its founding in 1968, and in the years since, he has become a fixture at the university, in the town of Bowling Green, and in the international rugby community. The rugby pitch was officially renamed “Roger Mazzarella Rugby Field,” honoring the man who built the program and turned it into one of the most prestigious rugby institutions in the United States. I was proud to play at Bowling Green, even though I was more of a “locker room” guy than a fixture on the pitch. Roger and the head coach, his son Tony, were encouraging and supportive of every single player, knowing that it takes a collective of personalities, skill sets, and chutzpah to get the job done, giving guys like me a seat at the table next to future pros and All-Americans.
