Are there ‘dark vessels’ going undetected in the Irish Sea? Unidentifiable ships in our waters could represent a threat to Ireland’s national security, but Trinity researchers have created a system to continuously and easily monitor maritime activity around the island. The Sea-Scan project, a collaboration between engineers and computer scientists from Trinity and the adaptcentre, and the irishdefenceforces, recently won a researchireland Innovation Defence Challenge award. Professor in Optical and Wireless Networks, Marco Ruffini, and Associate Professor of Vibrations, Acoustics and Dynamics, John Kennedy, have led the project which harnesses existing underwater fibre cables to use a system known as Distributed Acoustic Sensing. This will now give us a greater and more reliable understanding of what is going on off our coasts.
