The Sailor’s Eyeball achieves its massive size because it is coenocytic. This means it contains multiple nuclei within its single cell membrane. This structural adaptation allows the organism to manage its large volume without dividing into smaller individual cells.
Its reflective appearance comes from a specialized cell wall made of cellulose. The interior is largely occupied by a massive central vacuole that maintains the cell's shape through turgor pressure. This setup allows the thin layer of cytoplasm to stay pressed against the outer wall.
Because of its unique size and structure, scientists use this alga to study membrane permeability. It provides a natural, large scale model for observing how water and nutrients pass through biological barriers. This makes it a tiny window into the mechanics of all living cells.
