It was discovered in 2018 by scientists studying how cells pack efficiently in curved tissues. Unlike simple prisms, scutoids have a different number of sides on the top and bottom, connected by a triangular face, allowing cells to minimize energy and fit tightly. This discovery helped explain how tissues bend and fold during development.
