I upgraded one of my older projects planitscrum and instead of the usual chaos, I followed this simple 5-step framework: 1. Snapshot first. Commit. Make sure it runs before you touch anything. 2. Build context. Feed AI your package.json, configs & entry point - not the whole repo. Do not feed your .env file✨ 3. Plan & prioritize. Security patches first, breaking changes second, nice-to-haves last. Prepare a markdown file with the plan and checkboxes. 4. Update 1-by-1. One change per step. Test after each. If it breaks, you know why. 5. Final review. Ask AI to scan for deprecated patterns & leftover inconsistencies. ✅ The key is treating AI like a junior dev - give it focused tasks, not your entire codebase.
