A three-part sequence of fielding errors Sunday paved the way for No. 2 Texas Tech softball to rout Iowa State University 17-6 at Tracy Sellers Field. The game was tied 1-1 heading into the second frame after both units recorded a solo home run in the opening inning. Tech catcher Jasmyn Burns and utility Desirae Spearman reached base as leadoff batters with zero outs and infielder Hailey Toney at the plate. Toney connected on a slap hit and chaos ensued. The ball bounced once in the dirt before landing in Iowa State pitcher Lauren Schurman’s glove. Schurman threw to third base but missed McKennna Andrews, waiting to tag the runner out. The ball rolled toward the Tech dugout and pinch runner Makayla Garcia scurried home from second base.
