"All this time I thought I was connecting with people and people thought I was an a$$hole." It is called anecdotal communication and I had no idea it was a thing. Someone tells you about something hard. Your ADHD brain immediately connects it to something you have been through. So you share your experience. Not to take over. To say, "I get it. You are not alone." But that is not how it always lands. When I found this out I was crushed. I have literally communicated this way my entire life. Here is where I have landed though: I will always err on the side of making sure somebody does not feel alone. But I am learning that they do not need my whole story to feel that. The reframe that has helped me: "I have been through that too. What did you do?" Full episode of The Panel of Two with Gigi Verrey from verysmartideas is out now.
