Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Bistriceanu received the Purple Heart medal today at Gowen Field for wounds received in action in Syria on March 24, 2023. The award ceremony narrative follows: "On March 24th, 2023, Mission Support Site Conoco came under attack by Iranian-backed militants who launched five to six 22mm cluster munition rockets in several salvos. Each rocket dispersed over 30 submunitions, unleashing a devastating barrage of shrapnel that tore through equipment, living quarters, and Bradley Fighting Vehicles. SFC Bistriceanu, at the time a platoon sergeant for HHC 2-116 Combined Arms Battalion, was conducting a changing of the guard with members of his platoon who were at Force Protection Condition Delta in anticipation of an enemy threat. The first enemy salvo impacted near SFC Bistriceanu resulting in a traumatic brain injury.
