When we discuss woodcuts in our print shop, we are talking about items that are one-of-a-kind because they are hand carved. We thought we would discuss potentially the oldest woodcut in our print shop exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum because April 4th is National Handmade Day! We are often asked, “What is the oldest woodcut in our print shop?” The Lewis Winter Collection contains the oldest cuts at our museum, considering Winter was in business from 1888 to 1910. But what about his predecessor though? In the Lewis Winter Collection , there is a small woodcut of a business card for C.H. Holmes, who had a photo and wood engraving office at 627 J Street in Sacramento in the 1880s. He was hired to be the State Engraver in 1886 and eventually sold his business two years later to Lewis Winter. This woodcut contains the carved words, “C.H.
