Mars and Adams Township aren’t the first municipalities to propose a merger in Butler County. In 2010, residents in both Slippery Rock borough and township voted on a referendum to merge that officials said could increase borrowing power and eliminate redundant services, but it was struck down after concerns rose over individuality and identity. But successful examples still live nearby. In Mercer and Lawrence counties, Wheatland Borough voted to merge with the City of Hermitage in 2022, and South New Castle Borough merged with Shenango Township in 2023. “For former Wheatland residents, there were multiple advantages,” said Gary Hinkson, the city manager of Hermitage. “For residents and businesses, the property taxes dropped from 24.75 mills to 5 mills.
