Knoch alumnus and Pittsburgh firefighter Michael Valletto had never had a major surgery before he donated his liver to Jennifer Krizmanich.
Despite a long road of recovery and testing, including 27 vials of blood taken in one day, surgeons completed the transplant in only a few hours, giving Valletto the satisfaction of saving someone’s life using his liver after his sister died in 2008 from a rare form of liver cancer.
Valletto said Krizmanich felt better immediately after the transplant since her old liver had been failing.
