John Wayne twirls a Winchester 1892 rifle by its lever with one hand in his introduction as Ringo Kid in the film Stagecoach (1939). The rifle used in this film has an enlarged D-loop lever to make the trick easier.
John Wayne used this type of modified Winchester 1892 and performed this trick in many of his Westerns beginning with Stagecoach. John Wayne worked with famed stuntman and rodeo champion Yakima Canutt to create and perfect this trick.
“So, I went to my longtime friend Yak, (Yakima Canutt) and we sat down and puzzled out a way to make it look like that 30-30 had been part of my being since I was old enough to walk; and the way he did it was to pen the lever action into an oval shape so that I could twirl the rifle.” —John Wayne
