As a young boy trying to join a Mardi Gras Indian tribe, it took Howard Miller six weeks just to get in the door of the big chief’s house — the tribe’s headquarters. Miller went from waiting outside the gate to being allowed to stay on the porch. It took him getting caught in a thunderstorm before he was finally let inside.
