I did not create these family portraits with a camera, but with AI based on selfies and simple phone photos. What interests me here is not just the technical quality, but the question of what a family portrait actually is today. In the past, you would hire a photographer for this. You would arrange a date, get dressed, position yourselves, and then an image would be made that was meant to stand for something: closeness, family, memory, perhaps even an idealized version of yourselves. Today, we document ourselves constantly anyway. Thousands of images, every day, everywhere. And yet this other kind of image still exists: the consciously composed portrait that is meant to stay. If an image like this can now be created without a traditional photo shoot, then something shifts. Maybe the documentary aspect was never the true core.
