Plastic pollution sure is an eyesore. But what actually makes it so harmful to the ocean?
Marine animals mistake plastic for food, leading to internal injuries and starvation. Others become entangled in debris or abandoned fishing gear, unable to feed or breathe. Plastics can also smother and break coral reefs, which provide habitat for countless species.
Over time, plastics break down into microplastics, carrying toxins up the food chain and into our own bodies. In the sun, they release greenhouse gases while also concentrating toxic pollutants in surrounding waters.
But we can change that. sungaiwatch is tackling the plastic crisis head-on in Indonesia, stopping plastic before it reaches the ocean. Today, they officially begin an incredible 1,200 km run across Indonesia to raise awareness and expand their impact.
