On expedition in Antarctica, our cofounder paulnicklen witnessed a behavior in Weddell seals that was so strange, it left researchers stumped. One individual repeatedly approached the same seal and produced a series of loud, directed vocalizations at close range. This went on for hours. What puzzled Paul most was the other seal’s response, or lack thereof. Despite the aggressive barrage, it showed no signs of stress, avoidance, or aggression. It simply endured. The interaction was so unusual that it remained unresolved for years. But as technology has improved, researchers now believe they’ve identified the cause: The other seal forgot to do the dishes. Again. April Fools! Photo by paulnicklen #Antarctica #Seal #AprilFools #Funny #Explore
