US President Donald Trump wants to reopen the notorious Alcatraz prison, and has asked for $152m (£115m) to do so. His budget request is seeking money "to rebuild Alcatraz as a state-of-the-art secure prison facility", with funds covering the first year of costs. Located near San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, the maximum security facility was closed in 1963. Since then, it has served as a tourist attraction, bringing in $60m (£45m) in revenue. Former speaker for the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi criticised the plan, calling it “a stupid notion that would be nothing more than a waste of taxpayer dollars and an insult to the intelligence of the American people”.
