Gifted to the #UnitedNations by #Rwanda, the Kwibuka Flame of Hope is displayed at UN Headquarters in New York. The monument symbolizes resilience and courage following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, when more than 1 million people were systematically killed in less than three months. “Kwibuka” means “to remember” in the Kinyarwanda language and refers to the annual period of mourning marking the start of the genocide on 7 April. On Tuesday’s International Day of Reflection, we honour those who perished, and reflect on the suffering of those who survived. The day serves as a tragic reminder of the need to #StandUp4HumanRights — always. “We must learn from past failures and protect the living — by rejecting hatred, inflammatory rhetoric and incitement to violence,” said UN Secretary-General antonioguterres. “The UN stands with the people of Rwanda.
