Today is the start of the week-long celebration of Kwanzaa. Kwanza is the Swahili word for "First fruits of the harvest," and Kinara is the Swahili word for "candle holder." Each candle on the kinara represents the seven principles of Kwanzaa: Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith.
