April 9th is National Cherish An Antique Day! Considering much of our print shop exhibit is a depiction of a mid-to-late 1800s printing office, we have a lot of antiques that are cherished because these items are not manufactured anymore. For today, Howard cherished the antique hand press and letterpress printed an image from a woodcut that was made roughly 130 years ago. This woodcut was originally used in tobacco advertising for the Uncle Daniel brand as part of the Scotten, Dillon Company in Detroit, Michigan. While we do not condone the subject matter, it is one of our more detailed and larger woodcuts that we have in the Bill Gaylord Collection in our print shop exhibit. This woodcut, like most woodcuts, started out as a drawing before the desired image was hand carved backwards on a woodblock. It would be carved backwards because anything we print, we get the mirror image. This was printed with blue rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. #Ch...
