April 7th is National Beer Day! Sacramento’s brewing history began with the Galena Brewery, operated by Peter Cadel, in 1849 a block from Sutter’s Fort. Four years later, Louis Keseberg, a survivor of the Donner Party, operated the Phoenix Brewery for 8 years where the Galena once stood. Sacramento had a lot of breweries over the years. After all, Mark Twain once dubbed Sacramento the “City of Saloons.” No brewery is more iconic to Sacramento’s history than the Buffalo Brewing Company which operated from 1890 to the 1940s. For today, Jared recreated and letterpress printed an advertisement for the Buffalo Brewing Company that was first published on June 24, 1897 in the Sacramento Daily Record-Union newspaper. The two cuts for this print are a row of barrels and a column of beer bottles from the Lewis Winter Collection.
