April 6th is California Poppy Day! In 2010, the California Legislature passed Senate Bill 944 (37222.12), designating every April 6th as California Poppy Day. The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) officially became our state flower in 1903. For today, Howard sang about poppies and letterpress printed a cut of some California poppies. This cut from the Lewis Winter Collection was made about 125-135 years ago. Lewis Winter was a wood and photo engraver who had his business at 627 J Street in Sacramento from 1888 to 1910. He made engravings for local newspaper ads and magazines, but he also submitted work for the State Fair in the 1890s.
