SB 201 threatens the U.S. Supreme court’s ban on giving life without parole to young people under 18 unless and only if they have been convicted of homicide. SB 201 would remove that requirement here in Louisiana, opening up the possibility for more of our young people to be sentenced to juvenile life without parole (JLWOP) for crimes that normally wouldn’t qualify. We already know that harsh punishment doesn’t heal children or help communities. We already know that children grow and change as they mature into adults. Such a harsh sentence has strict limits for good reason, and our work has shown us time and time again how powerful second chances and holistic alternatives can be.
