At 1:50 p.m. today, Company 5 was dispatched to the 130 block of Bluestar Way on the Penn State University Park campus for a specialized rescue of a male construction worker experiencing a medical emergency on the roof. The crew of Rescue 5 alongside University Police & EMS made contact with the patient, and determined that the best course of action would be to remove the patient from the roof utilizing a stair chair and the bucket of Truck 5-1. The patient was safely extricated from the roof within 20 minutes of arrival. Company 5 responded Truck 5-1 and Rescue 5 with 11 personnel, Chief 5-2 (S. Pedersen) held command. Your Alpha volunteers train for incidents like this consistently. Last weekend, crews trained on a similar scenario involving a rope system. While this equipment was not needed today, it reminds us just how important continued training, even on the rare scenarios, can be.
