Dancing is one of our oldest, deepest instincts — and it’s always been one of our favorite ways to connect with each other. It’s a wholly unique combination of mental stimulation, physical exertion, and social ritual, and it’s been used to improve symptoms of Parkinson’s, reduce the risk of dementia, increase serotonin levels, and to do whatever it is people are trying to do when they do the The Worm. And we’ve been dancing for longer than we can even begin to measure. The history of dance goes so far back that it’s been difficult to pin down its origins, but no matter how you look at it, evidence shows that dance was a major part of prehistoric human life — probably older than spoken language.
