A young patient died at the beginning of my shift. I still had hours left to work.
That is one of the hardest parts of this job. Not only the loss itself, but the fact that the day keeps moving. Other patients still need us.
Families still need answers. They need comforting and our shoulders to cry over.
We still have to think clearly, speak calmly, and keep showing up.
People sometimes assume healthcare workers get used to this. In my experience, that is not really what happens. We learn how to function. We learn how to carry on. But that does not mean it does not affect us.
I am sharing this because many people in healthcare - nursing, ambulance services, and all other support roles - know this feeling.
The shift goes on, even when something in us is still trying to catch up.
But we are also human. We feel the hurt. It affects us to the core. We need the support, too. We also need a hug and a shoulder to cry over.
