WWF Excess debuted on TNN on August 25, 2001 as a live two-hour Saturday night talk and call-in show, originally hosted by Jonathan Coachman and Trish Stratus.
Viewers could phone in questions for WWF talent, and the show aired classic archive matches, with many chosen based on viewer requests. The show was originally planned to be a WCW relaunch program before negotiations fell through. When that deal collapsed, the WWF repurposed the TNN slot for Excess instead.
The show went through several format and host changes in its short run. Stratus was replaced by Terri Runnels, and by April 2002 the talk format was dropped entirely in favor of a straight recap show split between SmackDown highlights and Raw highlights, with the second hour rebranded as Late Night Excess and co-hosted by Raven. It ended on May 18, 2002 after less than nine months on the air and was replaced by WWE Velocity and WWE Confidential.
