Not your average lizards 🦎 In the Galápagos, survival rewrote the rules and marine iguanas became the only lizards on Earth that dive into the ocean. These prehistoric-looking reptiles feed on algae, slow their heart rate and bask on volcanic rock to warm back up after each cold-water swim. While there are 4 recognized species of iguanas in the Galápagos Islands, 3 of which being land-based, I mostly encountered varieties of the marine iguanas while exploring. I had pet iguanas growing up, so it was a treat to see them in the wild like this! At the Santa Cruz airport (GPS) on my final day, I spotted a stunning yellow land iguana soaking in the sun and looking majestic as ever. I was amazed by how different this one looks compared to the sea-going species. See slide 10 for a direct comparison of their unique faces and nostrils.
