🌺 MASSACHUSETTS AT THE MASTERS 🌺
25 years ago, Brookline's James Driscoll (
@charlesrivercc) opened the 2001 Masters with six birdies, good for a 4-under 68, leaving him just three shots off the lead after the first round.
Just 23 at the time, Driscoll earned his place at Augusta by finishing runner-up in the 2000 U.S. Amateur and even played a practice round with Jack Nicklaus earlier that week.
After draining long birdie putts on Nos. 4 and 9, the defining moment came at 16, where he holed out from a bunker, sending the patrons into a roar. As the noise settled, Driscoll later recalled hearing his brother Bill shout “DRISCOLL!” from the crowd, and couldn’t help but laugh.
Playing alongside him that day, two-time Masters champion Tom Watson called it, “the best round I’ve seen played here by an amateur.”
