On July 31, the SPCA Tampa Bay was charged with animal cruelty, accused of neglecting a sunburned pig named Waddles. The nonprofit paid a fine of $223 to resolve the case.
Every year, the county gets one to three complaints against shelters, rescue groups and boarding facilities according to Pinellas spokesperson Brian Pellerin. Rarely do these investigations result in citations.
The nonprofit’s treatment of Waddles spurred dozens of protesters to crash the SPCA’s annual fundraiser last weekend.
