Brittany Wiederin and her two sons, 12-year-old Kellen and 8-year-old Beckett, are hanging out in front of their house in Ankeny on a nice spring evening. The three have one last thing to do before they go inside: Finish their daily round of catch. The game of catch has become a daily occurrence for the family. It was a tradition that Wiederin’s husband and the boys’ father began with them last spring as he battled kidney cancer. The goal was to toss the ball around for at least a few minutes every single day for a year. When Cory Wiederin died in January, his wife picked up the baseball and made sure the mission was accomplished. Even after they reached the one-year mark, they’ve continued the game.
