The Tulsa Massacre of 1921, also known as the Tulsa Race Massacre, is one of the most devastating incidents of racial violence in American history. It took place from May 31 to June 1, 1921, in the thriving Black community of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, often referred to as “Black Wall Street” due to its economic prosperity and success.
Approximately 300 Black residents were killed.
• Over 1,000 homes and businesses were destroyed.
• Thousands of residents were left homeless, and property damage was estimated at over $1.5 million (equivalent to over $30 million today).
For decades, the massacre was deliberately silenced in history books, news, and public discourse. Survivors and their descendants fought to preserve the memory of what happened. Efforts to uncover the truth, including investigations, reports, and demands for reparations.
