The numbers and context 👇🏽
My husband bought a Mercedes in his early 20s, before he discovered financial independence or started pursuing it seriously.
He finished paying it off around the time we met, and we drove it for several years afterward. But owning a luxury vehicle comes with a lot of ongoing expenses beyond just a car payment like maintenance, higher insurance, expensive repairs and they kept adding up.
By then our priority had shifted to early retirement, not driving a fancy car.
So we found a $3,000 2006 Subaru Outback and sold the Mercedes for $10,000. That allowed us to max out his Roth IRA for the year and put some extra into savings.
Our car Subaru may be older, but its been reliable and has served us well for the past four years.
The point is to drive a car that supports your goals and priorities. For us its this Subaru!
