It’s almost that time of the year... August on the Vineyard, when even the church is at capacity. This is Union Chapel. It was built in 1870 during the early days of Oak Bluffs’ development. It was intentionally designed in an Octagonal style to encourage unity and equality: no one person seated more prominently than another. From the beginning, it was conceived as a non-denominational church, open to all faiths, beliefs, and races, which was radical at that time. Since its inception, Union Chapel has welcomed voices that weren’t always heard elsewhere. Over time, it evolved into a cultural sanctuary, hosting speakers, choirs, and celebrations that reflected the richness of Black faith, history, and leadership.
