Okay, Mama. Let’s get real about tantrums. That screaming, kicking, and crying can send us from zero to one hundred in a split second. We’ve all been there, but we don’t have to get swept away by the storm. We can learn to regulate our own emotions so we can be the calm our kids need. Here’s a 3-step process to regulate your emotions during a tantrum: 1. Pause and breathe. The second you feel that flush, that clenching in your jaw, it’s your cue to pause. Don’t say or do anything. Just take a deep breath. Inhale for four counts, hold for four, and exhale for four. This simple act tells your nervous system to chill out. It creates a tiny bit of space between the trigger and your reaction. 2. Acknowledge your feelings. Now, check in with yourself.
